INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1: PROPOSAL

First, we formed a group of 6 people, and then we needed to come up with a proposal  based on the selected country/culture.

Group members:
1.Group Leader: Liu Xin Yi(0372010)
2.Cindy Tan Kai Ling(0367713)
3.Lou Yu Han(0375593)
4.Sun Yu Tong(0377440)
5.Gu Jia Yun(0378994)
6.Shi Man Lin(0375858)

1. Brainstorming

In project one, we need to design a daily item that combines different cultures.
Our team held an offline discussion to determine the daily items we need to make and the culture we need to choose. At the beginning, we collected information online. We discussed: Malaysia's Nyonya culture, Africa's weaving culture, China's traditional lantern culture and traditional patterns, etc.

Then we determined the daily items we need to make. We proposed making table lamps, pillows, dinner plates, etc. In the end, we decided to make pillows that combined the history of pillows in traditional Chinese culture.

2. Research

In the second week, we first identified three ideas: porcelain pillow, lantern pillow and herbal pillow. Then, we collected and researched materials and learned that pillows have a long history in Chinese culture. Pillows are not just comfortable objects in Chinese culture. They also reflect history, craftsmanship and evolving social values. Over the centuries, the materials of pillows have changed from stone, wood and porcelain to softer and more modern designs filled with cotton, latex or feathers. This highlights the broader changes in lifestyle, aesthetics and the pursuit of health. Historically, pillows in China are a symbol of status and cultural beliefs.

We further studied the importance of pillows to the human body and discovered that pillows affect our spine: "The importance of a proper pillow for sleep is undeniable – from maintaining proper neck and spine alignment to ensuring comfort, pressure relief, and allergy prevention."

3. Ideas and sketches

Idea 1: The inheritance of jade pillow craftsmanship and the integration of modern culture

Our team members completed the sketch about the porcelain pillow:

Design concept: The jade pillow is combined with modern ergonomics to create a design suitable for contemporary sleep. Inspired by the butterfly-shaped pillow, which is famous for its support structure, I combined its comfort with the cultural essence of the jade pillow. And combined the shape with the Ruyi in traditional Chinese culture, incorporating its symbolic meaning of protection and good luck to bless a peaceful dream.

Idea 2: The Warmth of Lanterns and the Wisdom of the Luban Lock

Our team members completed the sketch of the lantern pillow:

Design concept: Inspired by the Linglong pillow. The shape is combined with the lantern. This hollow design can help reduce the pressure on the ears when lying on the side and improve comfort. Two koi carps with traditional Chinese patterns are added to the design of the pillow to express the Chinese phrase "Year after year of abundance".

Idea 3: Integrating Traditional Herbal Therapy and Comfort

Our team members completed the sketch of the herbal pillow:

Design concept: Combining traditional Chinese herbs and pillows, different herbs can have different effects. The buckwheat-filled cushion supports spinal alignment, while the memory foam evenly distributes weight to relieve pressure. The material is silk texture.

4. Final Proposal Submission

We worked together offline to compile all content into proposal slides.

PROJECT 1-REFLECTION

After completing Project 1, I found this course very interesting, combining different cultures with daily necessities. However, we discussed for a long time when deciding the theme. After completing this project, I learned how to collect materials, how to complete a proposal, and learned a lot about traditional Chinese culture. This group collaboration also made me realize the importance of group collaboration.

PROJECT 2: DATA COLLECTION

In project two, we collected data. Our data collection methods mainly included online research, observation, and surveys. The tools and resources we used for data collection included visual materials, articles, physical objects, Google Forms surveys, and online museum exhibitions.

Research goals:

Further explore the historical and cultural background of the three chosen directions, refine the feasibility of the initial design during the research process, conduct surveys to understand market demand, and identify the target user group.

Survey Research - Google Forms:

Our team created a Google Form to collect public opinions and feedback. This form collects users' perceptions of traditional Chinese elements, their interest in pillows that incorporate Chinese culture, and their preferences for pillow functions.

Here is a summary of the responses we collected from the Google Form survey after we distributed it:

Survey Research - Field trip:

Next, we conducted a field survey and collected pillows of many different shapes, materials, and functions.
In the form, we found that users were more interested in herbal pillows, so we further understood the functions of traditional Chinese herbs and the production process of herbal pillows.

This is a video of our field investigation:

Photos taken during our physical inspection:

Next, we completed the data collection and collation offline. This is the video of our completion:

PROJECT 2-REFLECTION

When completing project 2, we collected physical materials and online information, and learned how to make herbal pillows, the history of Chinese pillows, etc. We also used Google Forms to complete public surveys to understand public needs and analyzed data as a group, further improving the functions and effects of pillows based on our initial ideas. When completing this project, I felt that teamwork is very important, and reasonable division of labor and cooperation can make our completion efficiency higher.

FINAL REFLECTION

When I finished this project, I thought this module was very interesting. The integration of daily culture and different cultures made me feel that this task was both challenging and interesting. When I finished Project 1, I learned a lot while collecting materials: the importance of pillows to the human body, the development history of Chinese pillows, the development history of Chinese pillow materials, the efficacy of traditional Chinese herbs, etc., which made me further understand the pillow culture. In Project 2, we conducted public surveys and physical surveys, which made us understand that the public prefers a combination of beauty and efficacy when choosing pillows. When completing the survey, I learned how to analyze data, collect relevant materials, and better improve our design.

This project was completed in a group. I am very happy to complete our pillow design and our TikTok video with my team members. This teamwork made me know how to better divide the work and collaborate.

In these seven weeks, I learned a lot. I learned that in our daily lives, large and small items around us have different designs. Large and small daily items can also be combined with different cultures to give different meanings and designs. I learned the importance of the team. I am very happy to learn so much knowledge in these seven weeks.
