Title: "Letters are a beacon of hope"
Artist: Karolis Strautniekas
Size: 768 × 1178 pixels
Year: Unknown
Medium: Digital Illustration
Painting Observation:
This work is a digital illustration. In the picture, there is a beam of
light emitting from the center of the picture, shining on the crowd in the
lower left corner. The source of the beam is the letter in the hand of the
woman lying on the ground in the middle. The background of the picture is
black, and in the darkness is violence. In the bright crowd, people hold
signs that symbolize peace, including white doves and peace symbols. In the
bottom center is the logo of Amnesty International, which is designed as a
lit candle surrounded by barbed wire, symbolizing hope and freedom,
expressing the organization's concern and protection of human rights. The
composition of this work is a diagonal composition, which makes the whole
picture more balanced.
Analysis of the painting:
In the picture, the color is yellow and black, with strong contrast between
light and dark, and strong visual impact. The light beam originates from the
hand of the fallen woman, so that the focus of the character's sight is first
on the fallen woman. After that, our sight will move with the light and pay
attention to the resistance activities of the crowd in the lower left corner.
In the picture, the characters are full of dynamics. The slogans held in
people's hands use peace symbols and white doves to symbolize peace elements.
The color of the whole picture is yellow and black, and the unified color
gives the picture a sense of integrity. The symbol and text of Amnesty
International at the bottom of the picture better help express the theme of
striving for peace in the picture.
Interpretation:
This work comes from Amnesty International, which produces posters every
year. These works are usually used for publicity activities, fundraising and
raising public awareness of human rights issues. The purpose of this work is
to raise the level of attention paid to human rights. The two scenes of
light and dark in the painting reveal the problems in certain aspects of
society. The contrast between light and shadow strengthens the theme -
violence occurs in the shadows, and justice needs to be seen.
IMPROVEMENT IDEAS
1. Enhance contrast: I made the light area brighter and expanded
the range of the light source to increase contrast and focus the eye more on
the light area.
Sketch 1:
2. Changing the theme of expression: Mr. Fauzi suggested that I could change the theme of this painting to resisting keyboard
warriors, so I changed the weapons of the characters in the violent scene in
the dark to keyboards, symbolizing keyboard warriors, and the letter in the
hand of the fallen woman was changed to a screen, showing that some people are
experiencing cyber violence.
Sketch 2 :
3. Modified to a poster: After changing the theme, I tried to
change the painting to a poster style.
Sketch 3 :
I selected a relevant title and added a chat box behind the character, and
added some malicious comments on it to show that the character behind is a
keyboard warrior. After Mr. Fauzi's suggestion, I changed the original black
keyboard to white and changed the color of the added logo to better fit the
overall style of the painting.
FEEDBACK
WEEK 3: Mr. Fauzi suggested that I change the theme of the picture
to oppose keyboard warriors and add corresponding symbolic elements to the
picture.
WEEK 4: Mr. Fauzi checked my sketch and suggested that I change the
keyboard element in the picture to white for easier identification.
REFLCTION
In the exercises of task 2, we applied design principles and put them into
practice in the paintings of our choice, which allowed us to better
understand and apply design principles and learned how to present a good
work of art.
