Task 4: Animated Webcomic Cover and One-Page Comic for "The Monkey's
Paw"
Assignment Requirements:
- Comic Cover: Design a cover that represents your interpretation of The Monkey’s Paw, including an illustrated masthead created in Illustrator. You may use Photoshop to manipulate textures and images for a surreal effect inspired by Sandman covers or refer to “surrealistic adobe illustrator artwork”. Include subtle animations if desired to create a haunting atmosphere.
- One-Page Comic: Translate a selected part of the story into a single-page, animated webcomic with at least 3 panels animated using GIFs in Google Slides. Focus on panel-to-panel transitions (e.g., moment-to-moment, action-to-action, subject-to-subject) to maintain suspense and continuity.
- Format: Portrait orientation for phone or tablet display. Assemble all elements in Google Slides for presentation.
References and Inspiration:
- Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud for narrative transition techniques.
- Framed Ink by Marcos Mateu-Mestre for composition and depth principles.
- Dave McKean’s Sandman covers for visual style and mood inspiration or vector based surrealistic artwork.

Chosen text:
I referred to other works and wanted to combine the ape and the monkey's paw
in the story. In order to add a horror element, I chose a horror-style font,
and added blood elements in the background to create a horror feel.

Cover production process:
When making the background, I first outlined it with a pen, and then used
Gaussian Blur to blend it into the background.
I chose this as the monkey's paw, giving it a sense of pressure breaking
through the screen. I first adjusted its tone and light in Photoshop.

Comic Progress:
I first analyzed how to draw the text I chose, and then I completed my
sketch on paper.
Scene 1: I chose the action of two men smoking cigarettes
Scene 2: Focus on the text "the wind was higher than ever" and show the
scene outside the window.
Scene 3: It is the picture of the man sitting in front of the brazier
Scene 4: Combine "he last was so horrible and so simian that he gazed at
it in amazement. It got so vivid that, with a little uneasy laugh" using
fire and the monkey's face.
Scene 5: It is the action of the man putting out the fire
Scene 6: The man walks into the room with the monkey's paw
This is my sketch:

I then brought it into Illustrator to digitize it, using the Pen tool to
outline it.

Next, I color the comic sketch:
When making the Gif, I first created 5 artboards in the illustration and
adjusted the details of each artboard frame by frame.
After that, I imported it into Photoshop, made a Gif, and adjusted the timing
of each frame.

Reflection
When I finished this assignment, I learned how to use illustrations to create
comic pages. This assignment was a little difficult for me to complete because
I forgot to make it in layers, which made coloring very difficult. But I
learned how to make comics more continuous and how to make GIF.
