LECTURE

This week, Mr. Fauzi's lecture first introduced us to basic composition.
  • Focal Point The key element of any good composition is a strong focal point, as it helps the viewer's eye naturally rest first on the important parts of the design.
  • Balancing Elements A good way to get a handle on asymmetrical balance is to think of each element as having ‘weight’.
  • WHITE SPACE White space is mostly known as “empty space” to balance up the main focus of a composition.

Fig.1.1

This is followed by an explanation of the rule of thirds.
Trilithography is the process of dividing an image into three equal parts using two horizontal and two vertical lines. This imaginary grid produces nine sections with four points of intersection.
When you place the most important elements of your image at these intersections, you will produce a more natural-looking image. It is also recommended to place any horizon lines on the top horizontal line or the bottom horizontal line.

Fig.1.2

Mr. Fauzi suggested that we should place important elements at the intersection to create a more natural image. Here are a few examples:

Mr. Fauzi then introduced us to the Golden Ratio. The Golden Ratio is a mathematical proportion that, when used in design, creates an organic, natural composition. In design, the Golden Ratio boils down to aesthetics-creating and appreciating beauty through harmony and proportion. When applied to design, the golden ratio provides a sense of artistry.

This is an example of using the golden ratio in poster design:

WEEK 2: PRACTICAL

This week Mr Fauzi asked us to complete a solid collage, in class Mr Fauzi showed us how to choose elements and make a solid collage through a video.

I chose collage elements of varying sizes from my magazine to create my solid collage. I borrowed the lift from the magazine as a background and split the lift to create a crossover feeling.

Mr Fauzi set us up to have place three different solid collages using the same elements, and in the next lesson, he will choose the best one for us.

Here are the three different solid collages I created:

'The Show'Mural Competition

This weekend I took part in a mural competition at school with my group, the theme of the competition was unity in diversity, so our group chose the theme of world peace. The center of our picture was the earth half of which was a peace sign and half of which was the national flags of different countries. We fused the earth with the body of a dove and on one half of it we drew some famous places of interest in each country, such as the Great Wall, the Twin Towers, cherry blossoms, etc. On the other side, we drew little people of different colors, and underneath the picture, we lifted the earth with the hands of different colors.

Participating in this activity taught us a lot about working together and developed our teamwork skills.

FEEDBACK

The lecturer introduced and showed us how to make a collage during the class, after which we looked for elements in magazines on our own and tried to place different collages with three of the same elements.
