Typography - Task 3: Type Design & Communication
5/11/24 - 24/11/24 (Week 8-Week 12)
After that I exported my font named Width and installed it on my computer for
the next poster making.

Task 3: Type Design & Communication
This week, we need to choose one of the 10 fonts to look at for
interpretation. Then, we need to refer to some font designs and write them
down using three different sizes of marker pens, three different sizes of
marker pens are required to write down different styles of fonts.
Research
I have collected many different font styles on font websites and learned
some of the details of these fonts. I liked that some of their styles had a
handwritten feel to them, and some had styles where the letters were very
well balanced with each other, giving them an easy-to-read feel.
I chose the last font to make a reference design and sketched it out.
Sketch
Then, I combined the references I looked for and used different types of
markers to put them. They were written on top of squared paper.
Digitisation
I chose the Univers LT Std font for planning, and I think Univers most
closely resembles my sketches in terms of stroke width contrast.
Fig.1.1 Font anatomy
By deconstructing these letters, I observed that while some parts appear to be
equal, they are not - the body of the "o" is different in thickness, as are
the arcs of the "b" and "h".
After deconstructing these letters, I started to build my own. I used the
anatomical typeface of the ‘Tyd’ letterforms to determine the baseline,
x-height, ascender, descender, and cap height and applied these to the design
of my new letters.
Fig.1.2 Guides
Then, I referred to the sketches in the illustration and learned from the
video provided by Mr. Vinod, using tools such as rectangles, pen, and
curvature to bring out the strokes of the typeface.
Here is the final font design:
This was my first version of the type design, but Ms. Vitiyaa explained to
me the need for a uniform style in my strokes, drew me out how to ensure
uniformity in the letter strokes, and reminded me of some of the detailing
of the letters.

After that, I cancelled the curvature of some of the strokes and this is the
second version of the type design.

Measurements (from baseline)
Ascender: 700 pt
Capital height: 672 pt
Median: 500 pt
Descender: -182 pt
Next, I tried to create the font design of 'abfjmpqyur':

FontLab
After finishing my type design on Illustrator, I started developing and
exporting my fonts using FontLab.
After that, according to the video provided by Mr. Vinod, I imported the
font into Fontlab to export the font and adjust the spacing.
POSTER
Our final assignment was to create a black and white poster, and I used my
fonts for the composition.
3.FEEDBACK
This is my first version of the poster:

When I showed the poster to Ms. Vitiyaa for review, she explained to me that
she found the poster interesting, but the lines under the font affected the
characteristics of the font itself, and she thought I could readjust the
poster.
This is the revised poster:

WEEK 8
General feedback
Specific feedback: This week was an independent study week,
where I finished dissecting the given letter ‘hogb’ and exploring the font
style, and digitizing it in AI.
WEEK 9
General feedback: In the ninth week, Ms. Vitiyaa evaluated and
revised our drawn font sketches and digitized fonts, explaining to us that
the stroke style of our design needs to be unified and the height also
needs to be consistent.
Specific feedback: Ms. Vitiyaa pointed out that my sketches
were inconsistent and showed me how to sketch the fonts, and explained the
details of the ‘t’ and ‘l’ and how to keep the strokes consistent.
WEEK 10
General feedback: This week, Ms. Vitiyaa asked me to continue
working on our e-portfolio and asked us to refer to our classmates’ feedback
and review our font designs.
Specific feedback: Ms. Vitiyaa felt that my handwriting was
acceptable, then she checked my previous blog assignments and asked me to
continue revising my blog.
WEEK 11
General feedback: Ms. Vitiyaa explained to us the tasks for this
week, asking us to perfect our fonts and make posters, and complete our
e-portfolio before the next class.
Specific feedback: This week, Ms. Vitiyaa guided us on how to
use FontLab to export our fonts and helped us answer questions about this
software.
WEEK 12
General feedback: This week, Ms. Vitiyaa asked us to make a
poster using our own fonts and explained the requirements for the blog
content.
Specific feedback: Ms. Vitiyaa showed us how to adjust the
kerning to be more appropriate in Fontlab.
WEEK 13
General feedback: In week 13, Ms. Vitiyaa explained to us the
specific requirements and details of the 4th blog and checked our posters.
Specific feedback: When Ms. Vitiyaa checked my poster, she
explained to me that the line under my font would easily affect the display
of the characteristics of my font, and asked me to continue to revise my
poster.
4.REFLECTIONS
Experience: While completing this project, I learned how to
design my own typeface. Completing the anatomy of the typeface to
interpret it was a bit tough for me. While working on the font design, I
learned how to keep the style of the font strokes consistent.
Observations:I have observed that when keeping the stroke style of
the font strokes, we can split the font strokes and use the same parts.
For example, after determining the stroke style of the letter ‘o’, we can
apply the part of the letter ‘o’ to the letter ‘d’ to keep the consistency
of the font strokes. When using rectangles to complete the design, pay
attention to isometric scaling.
Findings:In completing this project, I discovered and learned
about many different styles of typography and learned how to use
typographic reference lines and keep letter strokes in a consistent style.
Whilst learning and referencing different font styles, I have discovered
that the same font can be designed in many different styles and that I
still need to learn more to perfect my font design.
5.FURTHER READING
This book presents a history of the development of typefaces and the
importance of contemporary typography. It mentions representative works from
different periods of type technology, gives examples of how movable type
revolutionized the dissemination of knowledge and social progress, and
describes how the spread of digitalization and internet technology has
brought about a boom in type creation and design.
The book also mentions that typography is no longer a neglected design
but is considered a high art. Fonts have become part of popular culture,
with attention paid to their aesthetics and history in all aspects of life.
The article also mentions that the number of fonts available for download
and use is now over 200,000, a huge leap from the number of fonts available
just a few decades ago. Advances in technology have made font design tools
easier to use and distribution of fonts easier and faster
